A
Brief History
There has
been a Fire Brigade in Soham for many years but Soham Fire
Station was officially opened in 1955 when a group of local men committed
themselves to providing an invaluable service for the people of Soham. Based in
Fountain Lane the men all had regular jobs, but when the call came they dropped
tools to answer someone else's needs. And nothing has changed in its 50-year
history. Soham Currently has 19 retained firemen who are on call 24 hours a day,
seven days a week, 52 weeks of the year. They have
all undergone intensive training and meet every Thursday to go through drills.
On average they are called to around three incidents a week, dealing with
everything from car accidents and minor fires to helping the Cambridgeshire Fire
Service at major incidents. Many of
the present crews have followed in their fathers' footsteps or had relatives in
the fire service. Their
efforts are appreciated. When there were threats of taking one of the stations'
two engines away, 6,000 of the town's 10,000 population signed a petition winning
Soham the right to keep both engines.
