'At a Glance' Information for Library Users

Cambridgeshire County Council' Libraries have produced a series of "at a glance" packs to give people information on how well their local library is performing and to outline future plans for service improvements. The profiles were produced for each of the 31 static libraries in Cambridgeshire and are intended to provide a rounded view of each library, its level of use - number of visitors and items loaned annually - and membership, as well as its range of services, facilities and activities such as Internet/computer terminals, children's story times, baby and toddler sessions. Copies of the individual profiles have been placed in the appropriate Library.
County Council Head of Libraries and Information service, Lesley Noblett, said: "we are used to publishing information about the overall performance of the library service, but have come to realise that people are most interested about their own library. The profiles bring together all the information about how well an individual library is doing and the range of services it provides and we hope they will be a useful information source for both Library and Information staff and Library users in locals areas."
In addition, Library Development meetings are planned which will provide users with direct access to senior Library and Information Service staff, and enable them to put forward ideas for improved or expanded service provision, information which will be used to influence future service planning.

New Net Access Launched at Library

Soham Library users will be able to surf the worldwide web thanks to a new computer network. The People's Network at the library was officially launched by the County Councillor for Soham, John Powley, during a ceremony which was held on Tuesday 25th March 2003 at 3.00pm. There are now 10 new terminals, three of which are dedicated for use by children. Lynda Martin, library service partnership and development manager, said: "Cambridgeshire Library and Information Service is committed to making access to information available to the public in as many forms as possible and we are delighted that the People's Network project has enabled us to install these computers at Soham Library with no extra cost to the taxpayers of Cambridgeshire." The Government-funded project aims to install computers with internet access in libraries across the country.

 What’s new at your Library?

If you haven’t visited your local library for a while, you will see some big changes next time you call in. Your local library has now been provided with more computers, enabling you to access a wealth of information; anything from Family History to Current Affairs. in fact, a whole world of information awaits you! All this is possible under the National Lottery funded ‘People’s Network’ programme, which aims to bring easy access for everyone to the Internet and all the resources it provides. There is now no need to pre-book a machine for general browsing. and you can use a variety of Microsoft programmes. E-Mail facilities will also be available for a small charge. If all this is new to you, three are on-screen guides to steer you through. Should you need more help, details of courses and classes are available at your library. You can reap the benefits of using the internet to its best advantage using sites tried and tested by a team of librarians, using the library’s 'Internet Gateway’. There are computers specially set up with sites suitable and enjoyable for children too. from homework sites through to instructive games. These new facilities are available alongside all that you’re used to finding in your library: an abundance of hardback and paperback hooks, books on tape, and videos for all age groups. CD's and DVD's are available at larger branches. If you have Internet access at home, you can view all there is to see by calling up the library website on www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/library. So, from the days when your local library was near you, it is now even nearer! Make a point of visiting your local library - it’s really worth it!

 Doorstep Library needs Volunteers

Can you or someone you know in Soham or one of the surrounding villages no longer use the library because of mobility problems, ill health or caring responsibilities? If so, The Doorstep Service, a free home delivery service of books and spoken word cassettes, might be able to help. The service is run by Cambridgeshire Libraries and Heritage in partnership with library volunteers, is also looking for more help to deliver books to people's homes. It means giving up a few hours a month. For more information on how to receive books or help to provide The Doorstep Service, call Jenni Johns, Area Co-ordinator Cambridgeshire on 01353 616169.
