We have made some changes from 1st October 2004 as follows.
Please speak to one of our Receptionists if you need more detail.

 Saturday Mornings

Because of current changes within the NHS, we shall be closed on Saturday mornings in line with most surgeries across the country. If you need medical attention when we are closed then you should:

• Telephone 999 in an Emergency or
• Telephone 01473 299622 to speak with the duty doctor team at Suffolk Doctors on Call. The team is based at Newmarket Hospital and their work is an extension of the weekday night service and weekend service you have been using for many years.

 Dispensary

Our Dispensary will continue to be open on Saturdays from 9.00am to 10.30am for you to collect repeat prescriptions ordered two working days in advance. We shall not be preparing new medication on Saturdays. In addition, during those times we shall give medical examinations by prior appointment for insurance companies, HGV drivers and others outside the normal NHS service.

 Home Delivery of Medication

We are conscious that we have numerous elderly and house-bound people in Soham and the surrounding villages who would appreciate repeat medication being delivered to their doors. We shall have volunteer drivers who will deliver direct to your door on the following days:

• Fordham & Isleham - Tuesdays
• Barway & Wicken - Wednesdays
• Chippenham - Thursdays

When you send us your repeat slip, please mark in the top right hand corner the day and time you would like the delivery, within a two hour timescale. These deliveries will be in addition to the existing arrangements we have for the minibus to deliver to your village. David Carter will be our first volunteer driver and we are hoping that more volunteers will come forward as the service grows. If you are interested then please contact Michael Wilde, Practice Manager, on 01353 624123.

Expansion Plan for Soham Staploe Medical Centre

Plans have been put forward to extend Soham's Staploe Medical Centre to help cope with the town's increasing population. The centre in Brewhouse Lane has submitted a planning application to East Cambridgeshire Council to extend the building to create six more consulting rooms and 20 extra parking spaces. Practice manager Michael Wilde said: "Because of all the new houses which have been and are being built, there are more people coming into the town so we need more consulting rooms to deal with the growing population." Currently 357 new homes are being constructed on a 26-acre site between Townsend and Mereside, which is set to see Soham's population rise by 10 per cent. The go-ahead has also been given for 44 houses to be built behind The Birches and up to 100 homes could be constructed on the AA Griggs site in Townsend after outline planning permission was granted to demolish buildings there and use the land for residential development.
The practice, which is also used by villagers from Fordham, Isleham, Wicken and Chippenham, has 16,000 patients registered with it and around 1,000 people visit the centre each week. The extension would be built on a site which is currently arable farm land and car parking spaces would be increased from 43 to 63. If planning permission was granted, Mr Wilde said it was hoped work would start on the development later this year or early in 2007 and he anticipated it would take four to six months to complete the works. During this time the medical centre would continue to operate as usual. The centre employs 10 doctors and 34 staff and Mr Wilde said more staff would be taken on gradually once the works were completed. He said the money for the improvements had been raised privately and the exact cost of the works had not been finalised.
