Soon it will be Easter. It is hard to believe that it is already the third month of 2007! It is even more difficult at times to comprehend that my family and I have been here 20 months now. It has been an enjoyable journey thus far. We still continue to learn much about the people and country, and find it very enlightening. As my family and I are journeying through living in another country, there is another journey that we are on at the same time. It is the journey of Lent. Lent is that time within the Christian Church Calendar when we have an opportunity to "stock take". The original meaning of Lent was "spring cleaning". During this journey of reflection and spiritual assessment, we may ask ourselves what is a Christian? Or, more pointedly, what do Christians believe? For Christmas I was given a book. It recorded the history of a mission station established in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) by the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland. It was set up under the leadership of a Mr Boyana Radasi. He was a young minister from South Africa who had just finished his training in Scotland, and went back to Africa in 1904. What a journey that must have been. The world was very different then to what it is now. Or is it? As we look at the world today we may get a sense of crime and violence escalating. This perception serves to remind us that the world and humanity is not as perfect as we may like to think. In fact, it shows that we are a "fallen" people. However, this truth should not make us despondent or hopeless. As Christians we believe that there is a way for humanity to be redeemed / made worthy / valuable. It is through the redeeming sacrifice of Christ Jesus. As we acknowledge that we are not perfect, Christ comes and restores us; redeems us. We are then recreated by the regenerating power of God's Holy Spirit. Thus, as Christians, we believe in the all powerful God Who is able to turn the world around through the acknowledgement that Christ has paid the ultimate price to make us "good"; and the Holy Spirit which recreates us into God's original design for us. May we on this Lenten journey discover/rediscover God's power to change people and situations. God Bless Edwin Myers |
