THE ANGEL

Station Road, Soham, Cambridgeshire, CB7 5DY

The two photographs, above, can be dated from the poster 'God Save the King' and Union Jack flags because this was the year of the coronation of George VI on 12th May 1937. The photograph on the left clearly shows a shop building which was situated on The Angel Car Park (now a newly built house) and as can be seen there was originally no entrance to West Drive Gardens. 
The house to the left of the shop was pulled down when work started on the new West Drive Gardens housing estate. The Angel can just be seen on the extreme right of the photograph the advert at the top advertises 'Stout' so we know it was being run as a pub at this time. The archway was eventually transformed into the lounge bar.
The photograph on the left shows a chap with a white coat on, it is believed to be Mr Arthur 'Porky' Long, the shop owner.
The known Landlords of the pub were the father of Mr Eddie Grahams from 1927 to 1940, Mr Eddie Grahams from 1940 to 1950, an unknown Landlady from 1950 to 1960, Mr Charlie Long and his wife Margaret from 1960 to 1985, Mr Tony Dickenson from 1985 to 1995 and Mr Mark Donahue and his wife Belinda from 1995 to 1997. From 1997 it was run by a couple of unnamed Landlords, for about 14 months, until it finally closed in 1999.

'The Angel' underwent  a full conversion into flats and a new house which was built on the original Car Park. The Picture below was taken in 2000 just before building works started.

It is with great sadness to announce that the former Landlord of The Angel Public House, Tony 'Dicko' Dickenson, passed away on Saturday 9th September 2006. Tony was well known face behind the bar at The Angel between 1985 and 1997 and will be sorely missed by all who drank at The Angel during this time. Warmest regards and sympathy must go to his family, Anita, Angela and Adrian Dickenson.
