 A Brief History

An amateur dramatic group was formed in Soham more than fifty years ago, but The College Players as such will reach its golden anniversary in 2004. The first play performed was 'The Winslow Boy', with Ed Hobbs taking the eponymous role. His wife Jill became secretary for the group for many years. The Fordhams, the Whites, the Taylors, the Asplands and many other well known Soham families have all played their parts at different times. David and Delia Tickner, Geoff Fisher and other teachers have also trodden the boards for the Players on many occasions, as well as the young aspiring actors they have taught over the years from all the schools in Soham.
Today, the company's members come from further a field - Fordham, Burwell, Mildenhall and particularly Isleham. After the formation of VIVA Youth Theatre, there has been a great deal of co-operation between the two groups, with VIVA members acting for the Players and vice-versa. It is hoped that as young members become too old for VIVA, many will naturally join the adult casts.
Recently pantomime has become a regular feature of our repertoire, with comedies, thrillers, revues, drama festivals and general entertainments all having their place. We have a loyal audience and we would whole-heartedly like to thank all those who have supported us by putting their 'bums on seats', and also the many who give their time and expertise backstage - the unsung heroes.
