Viva Youth Theatre to Light Up Broadway The chance to perform in the home of musical theatre has to be every young actors dream. Well, the dream is about to become reality for a group of Soham youngsters because this year they are going to do just that. The town’s Viva Youth Theatre is about to hit Broadway. "We are all incredibly excited," said Dan Schumann who founded Viva Youth Theatre some 15 years ago and remains on its board of trustees. "Chances like this – going to New York to perform - don’t come along very often in life and to give the children this opportunity is just wonderful.” The group, aged 11-25, are set to perform 'Fame the Musical' at the Playgroup Theatre off Broadway on 28th July 2012. They will fly out on 24th July 2012 and spend a day seeing sights like Central Park and the Statue of Liberty before the hard work begins. They will then work with professional choreographers, voice and acting coaches to help polish and shape the musical they will perform in Soham before they leave. "We will be taking just part of the cast who put on the show here in Soham on 11th 12th and 13th July 2012. They will have workshops with professional Broadway choreographers, musical directors and directors before performing to a fee-paying audience of up to 250 people," Dan explained. "We will be doing lots of other wonderful things during our time in New York including eating at world-famous Stardust Cafe in Times Square, the restaurant for the theatre set to 'be seen in' before going to see a current Broadway show. "It is going to be lots of hard work but enormous fun too and a fantastic experience I hope the young people will treasure for a lifetime." Viva’s Touring arm has taken pared-down versions of Viva Youth Theatre shows including 'Little Shop Of Horrors' and 'Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story' to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in recent years, all performed in Soham or the surrounding area first. The chance to take a show to New York was born out of a conversation between Dan Schumann and some of his contacts in the New York theatre world. What’s more 'Fame The Musical' is being directed by Mikey Kowalczyk who first got interested in theatre because of Viva. "I joined Viva when I was 15 and took part in shows including 'Aladdin' and 'Thoroughly Modern Millie'. I have now been to Edinburgh five times and performed in 'Little Shop Of Horrors' and 'A Slice Of Saturday Night’.” Mikey recalled. "Over the years I got more and more involved ‘behind-the-scenes’ too and directed the company’s recent show 'Out Of The East End'. I cannot express just how much Viva gives young people in Soham and the surrounding area. It encouraged me as a performer and gave me the opportunity to explore other areas of the business as well. Now I have the chance to direct the company in New York, where musical theatre all began. "What better show to do than 'Fame' - the story of young people who attend a performing arts school in none other than New York City!” Auditions for 'Fame The Musical' will be held on Thursday 9th February 2012 at Soham Village College from 7.00pm and are open to anyone aged 11 to 25. The cost of the trip to New York includes flights, accommodation, breakfast, dinner at the Stardust Cafe and a ticket to a show, a guide for the 7-day trip and all tuition. The home shows will be on 11th 12th and 13th July 2012 at The Brook, Soham, begin at 7.30pm. Ticket details will be announced soon. And tickets are still available for Viva Youth Theatre's current production, 'Smike The Musical' based on the story of Nicholas Nickelby by Charles Dickens. The show runs from 2nd to 4th February 2012 at 7.30pm with a matinee on 4th February 2012 at 2.30pm. Tickets are £8.00 (£7.00 Concessions). The new Cambridgeshire County Council facility will replace the old, small, open air site at Grunty Fen which will close at midday on Wednesday 2nd November 2011. The new centre will open from 9.00am - 6.00pm, seven days a week with a late night opening until 7.00pm on Wednesdays to make it even easier for you to recycle. It will be under cover so you can use it in all weathers, and split-level which means you won't have to climb steps to deposit your waste. The centre, which will be run by AmeyCespa on behalf of the County Council, will offer lots of opportunities to recycle everyday household items from paper, glass and plastic bottles, to less commonplace items like cooking oil, paint and electrical goods. The new facility is part of Cambridgeshire County Council's drive to offer the best services for local communities and to increase recycling and reduce landfill. Councillor Mathew Shuter, lead member for Enterprise and Waste at Cambridgeshire County Council, said: "This brand new facility is the first of its kind in the county and we believe it will change recycling for residents in East Cambridgeshire. Not only will it make recycling more comfortable and convenient, but it will also help residents recycle things like large rigid plastics, cooking oil and plasterboard. I want to encourage residents to visit the new centre with their recycling and help us reduce waste going to landfill." Chairman of the local liaison group, Councillor Bill Hunt, said: "I am really pleased to announce the opening of this new recycling centre. The last three years have been a great example of the County Council doing things "with" the local community not "to" them. It speaks volumes for the hard work and commitment of the local community of Witchford, local businesses, local members and officers from the County Council that this fantastic new building is about to open its doors. I'm sure it will make a real difference for the residents of East Cambridgeshire." For more information on the new recycling centre and what you can do to reduce waste going to landfill, visit www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/environment/recycling and follow the links. CCTV Texting Alert System CCTV has been involved in partnership working for some time, but one of the most important partners we need to work with are members of the public. It is generally agreed that the most effective way of tackling crime, anti-social behaviour and terrorism is through a vigilant public who report suspicious activity. Members of the public, who see something wrong within an area covered by CCTV, will be able to contact the CCTV Control Room in Cambridge directly by texting 62288. All messages will be acknowledged and CCTV Control Room Operators will prioritise the messages received and then carry out follow up action. A couple of points to remember: always call the
Police first to report a crime on 999 when life is in danger, a serious
offence is in progress, a suspect is at the scene, there is danger of violence
or damage to persons or property or there is a serious road accident. The text to CCTV should include the location
(Street/Town) and what is going on e.g. 'High Street, Soham, Fight'.
