Soham News 2010 Stage Chance Pantomime 2009 'Jack and the Beanstalk'
After last year’s sell out success of ‘Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood’, Stage Chance returns and welcomes you to join them this panto season for their giant of a pantomime 'Jack and the Beanstalk' The Trott family are in trouble! Dame Trott's behind with the rent and her two sons, the charming Jack and the ever so Dozy Den, need to make some money. When Jack goes to sell their beloved cow, Daisy, their only thing worth any money, all he can get for her is a measly bag of beans. However these are no ordinary beans! When a giant beanstalk appears in the back garden, Jack realises his extraordinary adventures are just about to begin... Producer and writer, 17 year old Dan Bell says ‘This year we have gone for the whole hog- new spectacular costumes made especially for the production, colourful sets live music, lots of slapstick including a very messy scene with lots of gunge! The very talented cast, all students from Soham Village College plus 8 primary school children from the surrounding areas who auditioned with 40 other young children for the junior panto dancers have worked very hard!’ The show runs from the 3rd to 5th December 2009 nightly at 7.30pm with a matinee at 2.00pm on the Saturday at Beechurst Hall, Soham Village College. 'The Big Top Charity Ball 2009' Charity starts at home – even in a recession. Viva Arts and Community Group, hosts black tie ball and fundraiser on Friday 22nd May 2009. Some may argue that fundraising has to take a back seat to other priorities during a recession but one East Cambridgeshire-based charity says it’s even more important in these economically difficult times. “Everyone is being hit by the effects of the recession and this is doubly true for locally-based charities where their primary source of funding comes through the lottery and local government initiatives,” says Viva Arts and Community Group spokesperson, Sarah Dowd. As more and more funding streams are put on hold and government support becoming even more difficult to guarantee, it’s up to the charities themselves to build their support base through other means". Viva’s lottery funding comes to an end in 2009, taking away over £30,000 a year from our income. This is why the Viva Arts & Community Group is hosting a black tie ball in May in order to raise awareness about the good work the group undertakes and the level of funding gap it is experiencing this year”. Jauntily named, The Big Top Ball, the evening is raising money to continue funding Viva in its work with young people through performance, outreach work with older people and cross-cultural communities throughout the region. Viva Arts & Community Group is based in Soham, but runs initiatives around the county and into parts of Norfolk and Suffolk. With a charity shop based in the Viva Centre in Churchgate Street, Soham, the group has a twelve year track record in delivering innovative arts and cultural projects as well as performances and a variety community projects The Big Top Ball will take place on Friday 22nd May from 7.00pm – 12.00am at Brook House Hotel, Brook Street, Soham. There will be a licensed bar, buffet, live band, goody bags, games and gifts for all guests plus a spectacular draw with great prizes to be won and a Grand Auction of Promises hosted by a Celebrity Auctioneer with lots including:- Dinner at the House of Commons & Tickets for Question Time (Care of James Paice MP) The evening is strictly over 18's only and the dress code will be formal (black tie and ball gown). Soham has been twinned for three years with the French town of Andrézieux-Bouthéon situated in the Loire Valley near to the city of Lyon in the South of France. To celebrate this historic occasion there was an official unveiling ceremony of the long awaited twinning signs which was held on Saturday 28th March 2009 outside The Viva Centre in Churchgate Street. The signs were officially unveiled by the Mayor of Andrézieux-Bouthéon, Mr Jean-Claude Schalk at 11.00am which was followed by refreshments in The Viva Centre. It is hoped that these new signs which are located at the six main entrances to Soham and funded by Soham Twinning Association and Soham Town Council will make people more aware of the twinning link between Soham and Andrézieux-Bouthéon as well as helping to raise the town’s profile.
Soham Masterplan Vision Underway Soham Vision is a masterplan for our town which will guide its development for the next 25-30 years. This is the first time that the people of Soham have had a real opportunity to influence the development of the town. The vision will look at all aspects of the town and its surrounding villages. It will try to understand the look and the feel of the town and its strengths and weaknesses. It will include issues such as employment, town centre regeneration, transport, increase in the number of homes, leisure facilities, tourism, retail provision etc. A working party has been set up to oversee the work of the Soham Vision. They have now appointed a team of consultants who want to hear from anyone in the area who would like to put forward their ideas for Soham in the future. A public meeting will take place in The Walter Gidney Pavilion, Recreation Ground, Fountain Lane on Wednesday 25 March 2009 when the consultants will be available to hear what people want for Soham. They want to hear from as many different people as possible. Once the consultants have collected all the ideas they will work on putting together a cohesive plan for the whole of Soham. When this has been discussed and agreed it will become part of the Local Development Framework (LDF) which directs the way in which East Cambridgeshire District Council controls the development in the area. In the meantime a team of Soham Town Councillors have been talking to people in Soham to make them aware of what is happening and how they can put their ideas forward for the Soham Vision. Some of the ideas they have already collected are as follows:- Develop town centre If you have any other ideas or suggestions please come to the Consultation meeting on 25th March 2009 or contact any member of the Working Party or Soham Town Council by telephone or letter. CCTV Texting Alert System CCTV has been involved in partnership working for some time, but one of the most important partners we need to work with are members of the public. It is generally agreed that the most effective way of tackling crime, anti-social behaviour and terrorism is through a vigilant public who report suspicious activity. Members of the public, who see something wrong within an area covered by CCTV, will be able to contact the CCTV Control Room in Cambridge directly by texting 62288. All messages will be acknowledged and CCTV Control Room Operators will prioritise the messages received and then carry out follow up action. A couple of points to remember: always call the
Police first to report a crime on 999 when life is in danger, a serious
offence is in progress, a suspect is at the scene, there is danger of violence
or damage to persons or property or there is a serious road accident. The text to CCTV should include the location
(Street/Town) and what is going on e.g. 'High Street, Soham, Fight'.
